Just after 11.20am on Tuesday, 6th September 1910, the body of a man, aged around 38 years old, was pulled from what was and still is known as ‘Pinner Lodge’ in the small village of Crawshawbooth that is situated just north of Rawtenstall, Lancashire.

At this point, very little, if anything, was known as to the identity of the man, but that would all change once word had reached Haslingden, another town that is situated just under an hour’s walk away.
