The Old Lane MURDER: A Chilling Tale from EARBY’S Past // 1892

Loading

On a midsummer’s afternoon back on the 4th June 1892, tragedy struck on Old Lane in the quiet town of Earby.

Eliza Cudworth, a woman described by neighbors as kind and devoted, was brutally murdered by her husband, Moses Cudworth, during a violent outburst fueled by drink and jealousy.

Their relationship, once seemingly stable, had grown fraught with tension as Moses descended into bouts of drunken rage, consumed by unfounded suspicions about his wife’s fidelity.

That fateful day, their walk along Old Lane turned deadly when Moses lashed out in a fit of uncontrollable violence, leaving Eliza lifeless in the shadows of the rural path.

The shocking crime left the close-knit community reeling, forever marking Old Lane as the site of one of Earby’s darkest moments.
