A Walk Through Newchurch Tunnels, Waterfoot

Loading

Just a quick walk through the Newchurch Tunnels over in Waterfoot.

These were built around 1852 but due to the Beeching Axe, the line and indeed the station in Waterfoot closed on the 5th December 1966.

In 2019, Newchurch Tunnels 1 & 2 were reopened as part of a cycle-way project that cost around £5.85m from a ‘Growth Deal’ secured from government by the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP), with contributions from Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Question : During the video you will see many engravings cut into the rocks of the tunnel entrances. Does anyone know what these are? Perhaps stonemasons marking? If anyone can help, please comment down below.
