The Slippery Slope of Caygill’s Infamy!

In this video, we retell the story of poor Ellen Caygill, matriarch of the Caygill clan that would strike terror in the minds of local residents of Newchurch, Waterfoot, Bacup and other villages further afoot!

Married to a violent man, and with several sons who would all fall foul of the local authority, with convictions ranging from domestic abuse to theft and drunk and disorderly behaviour, Ellen suffered a life full of misery.

And yet despite the many setbacks, she would still grind out a honest days living as a ‘hawker’ trying to sell her ‘wares’ to passengers along Waterfoot Station.

That was until the 19th May 1897 when a tragic accident would forever change the Caygill’s future.
