A Love Turned DEADLY! The Tragic Story of Margaret Ellen Knight / Whitworth 1941

Loading

In 1941, the small town of Whitworth was rocked by a heartbreaking tragedy involving a young lady who dedicated her time as a volunteer for the Salvation Army.

28-year-old MARGARET ELLEN KNIGHT was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, John Smith, a member of the Whitworth Home Guard.

This senseless act of violence stunned the community, as the young woman was known for her kindness and commitment to helping others.

As a member of the Home Guard, Smith’s betrayal of trust added to the shock and horror of the crime, making the tragedy all the more poignant for the Whitworth community.

But Margaret WASN’T the only person to lose their life that afternoon …

Called in at Whitworth museum yesterday (Sat 8/3/25) & saw a file on this case.I had previously found little on the internet (my lack of expertise) which I assumed was because ther was a war on & other things swamped the press coverage.I was told this tale by a relative (through marriage) who himself was in the Whitworth Home Guard at the same time & would have been 17 at the time. The doctor called to verify Margaret was dead was Dr John Tierney, who was my late wife’s Dr. in the years before we left Bacup for Leeds.
