Frankenstein’s TRUE Creator : How Percy Bysshe Shelley brought a MONSTER to life

Loading

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein did not emerge from isolation. It was shaped by voices, ideas, and influences that surrounded her – and few were as profound as Percy Bysshe Shelley.

In this episode, we trace Percy Shelley’s often-overlooked influence on Frankenstein: his philosophical ideas, his radical views on life, death, and creation, and the intellectual partnership he shared with Mary during the novel’s formation. From whispered edits to shared obsessions with science, nature, and the limits of human ambition, Percy’s presence lingers within the pages of one of the most important Gothic novels ever written.

Our journey then takes us to Rome, where we visit Shelley’s final resting place – or something close to it. Interred in the Non-Catholic Cemetery beneath the shadow of the Pyramid of Cestius, Shelley’s ashes lie far from the England he once defied, yet surrounded by the quiet poetry of exile and remembrance.

This is not just a literary history. It is a story of influence, absence, and legacy – and how a poet who drowned at thirty continues to echo through a tale that refuses to die.
