In the bitter chill of January 1895, two young men, William Tinsley and Francis Outhett, met a tragic end while skating on the frozen surface of Lowerhouse Lodge. The ice, fragile beneath the deceptive serenity of its glassy sheen, gave way, plunging them into the frigid depths.
Locals mourned their loss but quickly fell silent whenever the lodge was mentioned in later years.
