In 1905, Manchester was rocked by the murders of two boys, both each aged 15, found in the cellars of derelict buildings.
The first victim, discovered in April, had been brutally beaten and strangled, his body left in a crumbling basement in the industrial heart of the city.
17 months later and in 1906, a second boy was found under similar conditions, his lifeless form hidden away in the cellar of an abandoned building not far from the first crime scene.
Both murders bore striking similarities: the age and gender of the victims, the choice of secluded, dilapidated locations, and the methodical nature of the killings. These parallels sparked fear and speculation among the residents, who couldn’t help but recall the specter of Jack the Ripper, whose brutal murders in London remained unsolved.
Some wondered if the Ripper had travelled to the northwest of England, continuing his reign of terror. While there was no concrete evidence to connect these Manchester murders to the infamous killer, the unsettling similarities were enough to keep the possibility alive, casting a long shadow of fear and intrigue over the city.

Comic Cuts in 1905 consisted of four pages, so the killer must have just ripped a page from the comic he stuffed in the boy’s mouth. The page has no bearing on the murder. The boy was probably held in a house nearby and taken to the cellar by the killer where he was murdered. The comic most likely belonged to the killer and was carried in his pocket like a newspaper. Both boys almost certainly knew their killer.
