On Sunday, 16th June 1996, the peaceful waters of the River Ribble near Preston revealed a chilling secret. That afternoon, the lifeless body of 20-year-old Janet Mary Murgatroyd was pulled from the murky depths, her tragic fate sending shockwaves through the local community.
Janet had been missing since a night out with friends. But when her body was discovered, those fears gave way to horror. The vibrant young woman, who had her whole life ahead of her, had been brutally murdered — and nearly three decades later, her killer still walks free.
To this day, the mystery of who ended Janet’s life remains one of Lancashire’s AND Preston’s most haunting unsolved crimes.
